La Microcirugía es un tipo de cirugía que precisa de una magnificación de la imagen para poder llevarse a cabo, generalmente con la ayuda de un microscopio quirúrgico o cámara orbital. Un ejemplo de microcirugía sería para realizar la anastomosis (unión de dos estructuras/extremos) de vasos sanguíneos muy pequeños (diámetro de 1 mm).
Las técnicas microquirúrgicas son utilizadas en la actualidad por diversas especialidades: cirugía general, oftalmología, cirugía ortopédica, cirugía ginecológica, otorrinolaringología, neurocirugía, cirugía oral y maxilofacial, cirugía plástica, y cirugía pediátrica.
La microcirugía también implica un grado alto de especialización por la complejidad de la técnica asociada. Es por ello que existen varios equipos en mercado que permiten magnificar la imagen y que el especialista pueda ver el campo con los aumentos necesarios para desarrollar la cirugía, entre ellos están el microscopio o un sistema de cámara orbital. Ambos se posicionan a una distancia del campo que permiten aproximar (+/- zoom), enfocar (ajustar o autofoco) la imagen y poder visualizarla en un monitor. Los robots también se están sumando a este tipo de cirugías y ya hay prototipos que realizan microcirugías, eliminando el pequeño temblor que se puede producir con las manos.
